In our beautiful lake area, one of the things I've loved learning about most is how to give back to the community we cherish—and sometimes that expands to natural beauty outside of our everyday routes. That's why I invite you to join the Minnehaha Creek Watershed District's eighth-annual Minnehaha Creek Cleanup on June 29, 2014. This year's event has outgrown its old boundaries and is expanding creek-wide to collect even more trash!

As an elementary-schooler living in rural North Dakota, my favorite time of year was summer. Not only did it mean time off from the everyday school schedule, it also meant trading my puffy parka for my trendy two-piece swimsuit. And I loved my two-piece.

Author Augusten Burroughs said, “When you have your health, you have everything. When
you do not have your health, nothing else matters at all.”

He was so right. Whether you’ve had chemotherapy or a simple cold, everyone has been
knocked out by sickness. It’s no fun and it messes with your resolve.

This Thursday, April 24, head to Minnetonka Beach to officially usher in spring. As the official “caller” of the Ice Out on Lake Minnetonka since 1968, the Freshwater Society heralds the spring return of Minnesota’s iconic state bird to the lake area and to chase away the ice. The fourth annual Ice OUT/Loon IN event is the perfect place to connect with friends and get outside.

My parents own a plant that’s older than I am. A gift for their wedding, this scheflerra lived with Mom and Dad in their first apartment in Toledo, Ohio. It made the transition to the small town of Grinnell, Iowa, when my dad took a basketball coaching job at a local college. It nearly froze to death on their move to North Dakota, after which, it was pruned from a 5-foot, jungle-like masterpiece to barely the size of an indoor basil plant.

If you’re like me, you’ve heard about (and maybe tried…) a multitude of fitness regimes. High intensity training, strength training, cardio, yoga, Pilates, yoga-lates, boxing, piloxing (yes, that’s a thing)… the list goes on. But when it comes to what’s best, often the choice is more about what you’re going to stick with. For someone with a competitive spirit who loves team workouts, the new CrossFit Excelsior is for you.

With Spring trying desperately to, well, spring, many of us are starting to feel ansty. A spring cleaning is in order: taking stock of our habits, our tendencies and our routines and deciding if they're still right for us. What can help? A little push from a lake-area wellness center and a former General Mills vice president.

As we round the bend into spring (maybe? hopefully?), I’m ready for a little something new. The doldrums of winter have loosened their icy grasp and I’m on the verge of catching spring fever.

For me, the fever starts in my home. It needs a little deep cleaning, a bit of a spruce. Everything in my house seems to have a permanent imprint from wet, muddy, snow-encrusted boots and the staticky air feels dull, thick and dusty from lack of open windows and air flow.
