Wells Fargo Lake Minnetonka Half Marathon

Runners take their mark at the half-marathon.

Races around the cities are largely held near the Minneapolis chain of lakes, snubbing the waters of our beloved Lake Minnetonka. Fortunately, the Wells Fargo Lake Minnetonka Half Marathon is designed to give runners many views of the lake, beginning in downtown Wayzata and ending at Commons Park in Excelsior.

One of the older races in the Twin Cities, the half marathon is unique in its design, says Marilyn Franzen, partner at Podium Sports Marketing who owns and produces the event. “It's been called an ‘easy race’,” she tells us, “but it's not.”

Besides the views on the course, an added benefit is that donations are given to support local cross-country running teams, most notably at Orono and Mound Westonka high schools. “[We] love to support high school running teams,” says Franzen. “It's a win-win since the students, [who work refreshment stands], get to be involved in something they like.”
