Morning Awakens a Blend of Color and Reflection

Lake Minnetonka Mornings

“The picture was shot rather early in the day—morning sometime. That, in and of itself, was a factor as I am not an early riser, so it was unusual for me to catch morning shots with that light and subsequent reflection upon the water. I think I was drawn to both the mixture of color and reflection.”

Birch Bluff Beauty

 Judy Voigt Englund, Frosty Morning

Frosty Morning, which placed third in the Wildlife and Nature category of our annual Lens on Lake Minnetonka photo contest, was taken along Birch Bluff Road (Tonka Bay) by Judy Voigt Englund of Excelsior.

“I was on my way to visit my mother and stopped right along the road to admire the rime ice. It had been a foggy morning,” she says. “I only had my cell phone with me, so I rolled down the window and took a couple of photos with my cell [Apple iPhone 8].” Read more about Birch Bluff Beauty

Urban Oasis

Amy McPartlin never saw the need to own a high-quality camera until she took a once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa in January 2015.

“I used my iPhone camera the whole trip,” says McPartlin. “The photos were so awful that I got home and bought a real camera.”

For the past year, McPartlin has been using her Sony Cyber-shot camera to take photos of the wildlife around Saint Paul. Read more about Urban Oasis

Local Hobbyist Takes Second Place in Photo Contest

Talent and training are all well and good, but sometimes capturing a winning photo comes down to patience and luck. Being in the right place at the right time is how Nile Fellows describes capturing Female Oriole at Nest, his photo that took second place in the Wildlife and Nature division of our first annual Picture Saint Paul photo contest.

This is Fellows’ first award for his photography; as a hobbyist, he is less interested in accolades than in documenting Minnesota’s natural beauty “just for fun,” he says. Read more about Local Hobbyist Takes Second Place in Photo Contest
