For those looking for a way to immerse themselves in a weekend of holiday festivities, look no further. Christkindlsmarkt is back for its 18th year in Excelsior.
Inspired by traditional German holiday markets, the event is set November 25, 26 and 27. The celebration kicks off at 10 a.m. the first day along Water Street with the Grand Opening Parade featuring Christkind, Father Christmas, the Town Crier, Minnetonka Madrigal Singers, the German Spielmannszug Royal Court and more. Bobby Jensen will be the parade grand marshal.
Weekend highlights include the Children’s Lantern Parade at 4 p.m. November 26, featuring children carrying lanterns, spirit elves, carolers and more. Watch for Ms. Christmas, local choirs and musicians including the River City Singers, German guitarist and vocalist Troy Fleming, and a group of Ukrainian musicians who are fundraising to support their families in Ukraine. Younger attendees might be interested to note the attendance of Alaskan reindeer, Father Christmas and Anna and Elsa from Frozen.
The market will feature around 70 vendors, including longtime favorites and new vendors, such as one showcasing glass ornaments customary to Europe. “What we are trying to do is feature the traditional holiday foods and gifts that you would see in Germany,” says Myrtle Mackenzie, organizer and president of the Christkindlsmarkt Board of Directors.
The market isn't just for shopping, so come hungry. Returning vendors include Natasha's Pierogi, Dominick's Polish Foods, (fan favorite) strudel from Strudelhaus, German pretzels and roasted nuts. Pay a visit to the indoor beer garden at the Excelsior Brewing Co.
All ages. $5 per day/$10 for the weekend and children under 12 free. Times vary. For more information, visit excelsiorchristmas.com.
