For some, trying Yoga can be a daunting prospect. Between registration costs and the prospect of tackling all those poses, starting yoga can seem challenging. Luckily for the beginner—or the experienced yogi—free yoga at Union Depot offers accessible and high-quality classes twice a week through a partnership with Studio925 Yoga by CorePower Yoga & Spa.

The classes offered from noon to 1 p.m. on Tuesday afternoons and 9 to 10 a.m. on Saturday mornings provide a supportive and encouraging environment, says Tina Volpe of Union Depot. “It’s a great opportunity for someone who’s kind of been on the fence to come here and try something really great and unique,” she says. The instructors are well-versed in teaching all levels and making sure the classes are open to everyone, says Maren Hoffman of Studio925 Yoga.

And for those looking for a yoga experience different from the typical mirrored yoga studio, the Union Depot offers a beautiful open space with many windows and ample natural light which Volpe says brings a fresh twist to traditional yoga practice.

Union Depot is committed to providing a community-focused space with free public events, and free yoga at Union Depot fits that vision, says Deborah Carter McCoy of Ramsey County Regional Railroad Authority.

The classes have grown in popularity since they began in 2013, with Saturdays averaging 40 to 50 participants and Tuesdays averaging 20 to 30. Hoffman says yoga’s growth in popularity comes down to its physical and mental benefits, its non-competiveness and accessibility. “Really all you need is your mat and yourself to practice, and it doesn’t matter what level you are,” she says. “When you’re practicing yoga, it’s really just about being present within the moment.”

For those interested, bring a yoga mat if you have one (Studio925 provides some extras), comfortable clothes to move in, and water.
