In “Loons on the Lake,” you can almost hear the call of our famous state bird. A loon sighting in Minnesota prompts pride—which might be part of the reason John Haug, who captured the photo, was the third-place winner in the Wildlife and Nature category of our 2014 Lens on Lake Minnetonka photo contest.
Haug began taking photos 30 years ago when he decided to move to Europe for more than a year. Since then, he has always had his camera with him, and when he doesn’t, he says he usually regrets it.
“I really should keep it in my car daily when I go to and from work, as there have certainly been times when I’ve seen something and wished I had it,” he says.
Haug also says he can’t go boating without his camera in tow, because “you never know what you might see.”
Haug was able to capture the loons because of this type of dedication. He says his favorite subjects include panoramas, night photography, sporting events, travel photography and, of course, wildlife. “I’m always looking to get that perfect shot with the camera,” Haug says. “Wildlife is always a treat to shoot, as it’s all about being in the right place at the right time.”
