After rocking success during its inaugural year in Saint Paul, the Lowertown Blues Festival is back with a host of first-rate blues performers for 2015. Following a merger with the Famous Dave’s Blues Festival in Minneapolis, the festival moved to Mears Park for the first time in 2014. This all-blues event is “an afternoon of good blues music, free of charge,” event promoter Mike “Tiny” Rogers says. “The festival is a collaboration of national and local artists with a purpose to enhance the musical scenery here in Lowertown.”
With eight musical acts scheduled to play during the one-day festival, there will be a wide variety of soulful, blues-influenced performances on two outdoor stages. “The new Juke Joint stage, near the food court, will showcase our local acoustic blues performers,” Rogers says. This new addition will feature Saint Paul native Jimi “Primetime” Smith and Big George Jackson. The move to Saint Paul proved to be a huge success in 2014 and Rogers is anticipating an even bigger year in 2015 due to simplified transportation, courtesy of the expanded light rail into Saint Paul.
In addition to the free blues performances throughout the day, there will be a vast array of food and beverage options, art and jewelry vendors and even a car dealership on site. “Last year, we delivered a quality show for the whole family, and this year we plan to do the same so everyone can enjoy some great music in the park,” Rogers says.
Blues lovers of all ages enjoyed a performance at the 2014 festival.
