New Eyes for Excelsior: Taryn Barrow’s Vantage Point of Christmas Lake

Excelsior resident Taryn Barrow reminds us to recognize the beauty in our surroundings.

As Minnesotans, there are landscapes we become accustomed to seeing. Wise old trees reflected in glassy lakes are as familiar to us as our own reflections in the mirror. It’s easy to lose sight of how majestic our sights really are. Sometimes, it takes another angle and another eye to bring our appreciation and wonder back to the forefront.

Taryn Barrow, who took this photo, is a North Carolina native, but she’s quick to point out that she loves being in Excelsior. “I feel like it’s my home now,” she says.

This picture of Christmas Lake is one that Barrow had been dreaming of capturing for a while, as it’s a spot she passes every day from her nearby house. “It’s tucked away,” Barrow says. “If you don’t pay attention to it, you would probably miss it.”

At first glance, you may be drawn to the clouds. Barrow notes all the rain we had last summer; yet, in true silver-lining form, Barrow finishes her thought: “It made for incredibly interesting skies. I wanted to capture that.”

Perhaps this new Minnesota resident has something to teach all of us. From the ephemeral, clear sunny days we can’t get enough of, to the more grayer, rainier, snowier days of the year, beauty is never gone, but only waiting to be found.
