Mound Westonka High School senior Alex Robbins was recently named a National Merit semifinalist, putting him in an elite national group in the running for scholarship funds.
“Alex is a unique individual—he’s very bright,” says math teacher Lisa Paul. “He’s always looking to further his thinking. When I give notes in class, he’s already five steps ahead, asking questions.”
He’s usually five steps ahead outside of the classroom, too. He’s an Eagle Scout, trap league and ski team member and is also the sound and lighting guy for the Mound Westonka Pop Singers. When asked about his plans after high school, he’s quick to answer: “At least a four-year college. Probably a major in electrical or computer engineering.”
The process of being considered for a National Merit Scholarship starts with a Preliminary SAT (PSAT) test that determines semifinalists. In October, Robbins applied for finalist standing, which included an essay and principal recommendation.
The last National Merit semifinalists from Mound Westonka were twins Alexander and Chris Zylman, who received the award in 2008. This year, the school of about 675 students also has three National Merit commended students: Lily Frenette, Anna Pinault and Katherine Wetherille.
