Long Lake Hosts 10,000 Lakes Wakesurf Open Tournament

We know Minnesota isn’t Hawaii, but we do have something in common with the Aloha State. In addition to lots of water, Minnesotans have taken up a surf sport that’s growing in popularity around the world. Wakesurfing, where the rider surfs a wave next to a special boat that’s weighted on one side and tips to create the wave, has become a summer pastime for many athletes in the lake area. This year, Long Lake plays host to the 10,000 Lakes Wakesurf Open, a tournament for amateur and pro surfers alike. “People from all ages can have fun,” says Andy Weigman, co-coordinator of the event.Bring your family to the beach August 16–18 to watch the action. The pro surfers usually ride in the morning when the water is smoothest, Weigman says, but there are activities all weekend long including contests, music, food and wakesurfing demonstrations. It’ll be tubular, dude!
