Dr. Gladys McGarey, M.D. M.D.(H), the Mother of Holistic Medicine, comes to The Marsh on September 18 to share her vision of Living Medicine and recent life lessons. Dr. Gladys, who turns 94 in November, advocates for a paradigm shift in the consciousness of health care towards Living Medicine, which she says views illness not as something to be battled, but as life to be lived. It embraces the wisdom of our inner physician, understands that pain has purpose, and that being free of symptoms is not the same as full health. Dr. Gladys will share how she has applied this approach to her own life, including her recent breast cancer diagnosis and lumpectomy.
Born to medical missionaries who served leper communities in 1920 India, Gladys' childhood playgrounds were the Himalayan Mountains and jungle villages. She encountered the world's most supreme spiritual leaders in Mahatma Gandhi, Sadhu Sundar Singh and later His Holiness, the Dali Lama. She later pushed through medical school during the male-dominated world of medicine in the 1940s, and is a founder of the American Holistic Medical Association (AHMA).
In 2009, as a result of a letter from President Obama that was sent to selected people across the United States, Dr. Gladys convened a symposium of alternative practitioners from across the country to develop health care strategies to present to national policy leaders.
