Their Story
The Shiue family has been on a long journey to find a compatible kidney donor for Ron who is battling PKD (Polycystic Kidney Disease). As the disease has progressed over the years, his kidney function and overall health have been severely compromised. Last fall, his health situation was further complicated by heart failure. Ron is now experiencing end stage renal failure and needs dialysis multiple times per week. But the Shiues have hope and today they have cause to celebrate.
Ron is extremely hard to match with most donors. His immune system will reject 99% of the possible candidates. However, his niece, Micaela Brown, is a fortunate match. She is going to “share her spare” and donate one of her kidneys in a life-saving gift to her uncle. This is truly the ultimate expression of Kidney Kindness.
Surgery is planned for September at the Mayo Clinic and the family's event will raise funds to cover the cost of transplantation not covered by insurance. Community contributions will ease the financial burden for both families.
