Entertaining 101: Setting a Summer Table with Tips from the Experts at Five Swans

Five Swans offers expert advice on tablescapes.

Summer is a season of celebrations. From family get-togethers to Independence Day fireworks to weekend bonfires with the neighbors, summer is packed with festive events. So do it in style with some tips and tricks from Five Swans, Wayzata’s home and kitchen store.

Five Swans has been adding glam to tables around Lake Minnetonka for 51 years, and its staff has the design expertise to show for it.

For a coordinated table, choose one color as an anchor to create a flow throughout the setting. According to Five Swans’ Ann Kilby, blue is a popular color expected to make a statement this season—especially navy.

Next, add runners, centerpieces and dishware. Two popular dish brands at Five Swans are Juliska (its popular melamine is pictured at left) and Beatriz Ball. And a new line of paper placemats and runners is making a splash at Five Swans. Sophistiplate and Hester & Cook look like anything but paper, for an elegant look that doesn’t break the bank.

Consider using simple, attention-grabbing centerpieces. Vases, bottles and plants can make a table look both chic and organic and down-to-earth.

Kilby adds that galvanized metal (like the tray at left) or copper are great bases for any table. Start there “and put your own twist on it,” says Kilby.
