If you want to enjoy an evening of entertainment while mixing it up with fellow community members for a good cause, may as well make a weekend of it. First attend the TwinWest Chamber of Commerce’s “Dancing Under the Stars” gala March 9 at the Doubletree By Hilton Minneapolis-Park Place in St. Louis Park, and the follow that up a night later at St. David’s Center for Child & Family Development’s “Make Them Shine” gala at International Market Square.

When it comes to philanthropies, there aren’t many causes more worthy than feeding a famished population of people. And there may not be a pocket of the world more in need than drought-ridden Somalia, which Antonio Guterres, head of the United Nations Relief Agency, calls home to “the worst humanitarian disaster” in the world.

But what can a person living in the Minnesota suburbs possibly do to put a dent in 12 million starving Somalis, Kenyans, and Ethiopians currently facing the worst drought since the 1950s? It just sounds daunting.

The Minnetonka School District is offering a new arts experience for its elementary students.

“This is a huge undertaking for us” says Trent Boyum, artistic director of the new project. “Our district is very dedicated to the arts, and wanted to create a new opportunity for elementary students. In order to include a large number of students we decided to produce a stage musical at each school. We’ve found a really new and innovative way to involve all of our students interested in musical theatre.”
