A Fisherman’s Sunset
Alan Van Horn captures the beauty of a Lake Minnetonka sunset.
Lake Minnetonka sunsets can make quick iPhone snapshots look professional and filters on Instagram unnecessary. They can also make a man who has traveled to Italy and China pursuing his hobby of photography run to grab his camera to capture the simple beauty of the lake.
Excelsior resident Alan Van Horn took this picture standing on his dock near the Excelsior Commons on Gideon’s Bay.
“It was real late in the day when the sun was going down and just lit up the sky in a reddish color,” he says.
Though he moved on to marketing, Van Horn studied architecture during his first year at Penn State—where he learned about color, texture and balance, which has helped his photography. He has also studied photography at the acclaimed Santa Fe School of Photography and learned most of his skills while on a small group photo tour in China.
“I’m not into taking pictures of dogs or whatever,” he says. Van Horn’s focus is much more travel and water related—locations and landscapes are his specialty. Van Horn has seen some of the world’s most famous landmarks: He’s taken pictures of the Colosseum and the Great Wall of China. But he also has hundreds of pictures of Lake Minnetonka sunsets in his collection. It seems our photo-friendly, perfectly posed Lake Minnetonka is a landmark of its own.
