WeCAN’s Annual Drive Collects Gear for Families in Need

The Western Communities Action Network, Inc. (WeCAN) starts its fourth annual winter wear drive at the beginning of October. Items in good condition such as coats, hats, mittens and snow pants will be collected from October 3 to 21. “Anything that’s going to be able to help families get through the harsh winter” is helpful, says WeCAN family advocate and drive coordinator Lisa Floeter.

Last year, WeCAN donated 322 coats, 410 hats and pairs of mittens, and 135 other winter items, but the need for kids’ winter gear was especially huge, and Floeter expects the same this year.

People power is also needed to make the drive successful. Floeter says that about 20 to 30 volunteers help fuel the drive, including helping clients pick out the clothing items they need.
