Wanted: Excelsior Streetcar Operators

Learn to operate the historic Excelsior streetcars.

Do you love the Excelsior streetcars as much as we do? Here’s your chance to be a part of the action. Sign up now to learn how to operate the historic streetcars for the 2011 summer season.

The Minnesota Streetcar Museum is an all-volunteer group dedicated to preserving our transit heritage by restoring and operating historic Minnesota streetcars. To become a streetcar operator, you must be at least 18 years old, have a valid driver’s license and successfully complete the operator training program.

Operator training consists of:

  • Classroom orientation, and instruction on rules and procedures.
  • One hour of on-the-streetcar orientation and hands-on operation (with no passengers on board other than fellow trainees).
  • Three to five hours of one-on-one, hands-on training and practice on streetcar operation with no passengers on board.
  • Six to 10 hours of streetcar operations with passengers on board the streetcar under the supervision of a trained instructor.
  • Pass a written test and performance evaluation.

To be a successful volunteer, the Minnesota Streetcar Museum asks that you reserve at least one 3–4 hour shift per month to gain the necessary experience and confidence. Operator training starts in mid-April 2011. For more information or to sign up, contact Clyde Hawkins at 763.544.5963 or chawkb@yahoo.com.
