Tony Olivia: The Life and Times of a Minnesota Twins Legend

READ

In Tony Oliva: The Life and Times of a Minnesota Twins Legend, seasoned sports writer Thom Henninger offers a veritable buffet of baseball highlights, insider details and photos that will satisfy any baseball junkie.

Built on interviews with the very private Oliva, his family and teammates, the book tells the story of how Oliva left behind family in Cuba (one he wouldn’t see for a decade) to chase a big-league baseball dream. An epilogue on “The Hall of Fame Question” leaves no doubt that, in the hearts of Minnesota baseball fans everywhere, “Tony O” will forever be in a league of his own. —Phyllis Alsdurf

A long-time Minnetonka resident, Phyllis Alsdurf is a journalism professor at Bethel University in St. Paul. She is the author the children’s book It’s Milking Time (Random House, 2012).

DRINK

April is all about wishing to get outside, wishing for warmth. And with that warmth comes rosé season! These wines range from bone-dry, like Tavel or Provence, to slight fruit, like Rosé d’Anjou. A few rosés I love and think you will too: Rosé d’Anjou Ligeriens ($8.99) and Tavel Cuvée Royale ($16.99).

April also means white Bordeaux season. These crisp whites are a great refresher and pair well with lighter food like salads and seafood. Try: Chateau Loumelat Blanc ($10.99) or Chateau La Graviere Blanc ($10.99). —John Farrell III

LISTEN

If you have even a vague idea of what AC/DC sounds like, then you’re already intimately familiar with Rock or Bust. The band is unapologetic about its rock-itude. Sure, there’s some rock cheese to be found here (mind-probing art this is not) but that’s hardly the point. Leave your pretension at the door and you will have fun. With all the grime we sift through on a daily basis, what’s better than that? The world is better when AC/DC is a-rockin’. Certainly a bold statement, but one that rings truer than hell’s bells. —Alex Skjong

Alex Skjong has written for a number of publications in the Twin Cities, Chicago and Atlanta. He is a music lover first and an unreasonably tall human being second.
