A Poppin’ Fourth of July

The Cottagewood Store commemorates our country’s independence.

Every year, the Cottagewood Store in Deephaven hosts a popular neighborhood party to celebrate the Fourth of July. This year, they expect at least a couple hundred guests for the festivities and kids’ parade.

Kids have the opportunity to make their bikes patriotic at the decorating event the day before the parade. The Fourth will start with a pancake breakfast before kicking off the parade and carnival.

The first celebration at the Cottagewood Store began in 1961 after the Perry and Clark families marched the first children’s parade around the block and handed out popsicles. The parade continues to follow the same route and, in the spirit of the celebration’s humble beginnings, we encourage you to make a refreshing ice pop at home:

Watermelon-Blueberry Ice Pops
Recipe from the EatingWell Test Kitchen

Ingredients
3 3⁄4 cups chopped seedless watermelon
1–2 Tbsp. sugar
2 Tbsp. lime juice
1 cup fresh blueberries

Directions
Puree watermelon, lime juice and sugar to taste in a food processor or blender until smooth. Divide blueberries among freezer-pop molds. Top with the watermelon mixture. Insert the sticks and freeze until completely firm, about 6 hours. Dip the molds briefly in hot water before unmolding.
