We were taught to stop, drop and roll, but how much do we know about fire safety beyond that? While the primary goal of the Excelsior Fire District is to prevent fires, their secondary goal is to ensure citizens are educated so that they know how to react to a fire.
Fire chief Scott Gerber says that educating and learning about fire safety is a group effort. “We all have a part in this together. We can’t do it here at the fire department all by ourselves, and residents can’t either, but together we can get a lot further.”
And the department is doing its job: It recently received the Life Safety Achievement Award for its fire prevention accomplishments in 2013, awarded by the National Association of State Fire Marshals Fire Research and Education Foundation with Grinnell Mutual Reinsurance Co. Only 142 fire departments in the United States received this award.
The Excelsior Fire District is also active with school partnerships and other community fire prevention and safety events. For more information, visit excelsiorfire.org.
