This Photograph of Wayzata Bay Captures the Calm After the Storm

Sailboats float in the harbor at Wayzata Bay as a storm approaches Lake Minnetonka.
Photographer Mark Arnold captures the moments after a storm.

Each month, we feature one of the winning photos from our 2018 Lens on Lake Minnetonka photo contest. This month, we asked photographer Mark Arnold to tell us about “Sailor’s Delight,” which received second place in our City Landmarks category.

When and where did you take the photo?
The photo was taken last summer on Wayzata Bay near the Wayzata Yacht Club.

What kind of camera did you use?
The photo was taken with a Nikon 610 camera and 35mm lens, f10, 1/500 sec.

What’s your favorite thing about the image?
This particular day a storm was rolling off the lake near sunset, and I was driving past this bay and knew it had potential for a great pic. I waited for the clouds to open a little to let the sunlight peek through and saturate the many colors of the sails. The calm water gave off a nice smooth reflection to double the fun.

Tell us more about your photography background.
My photography career is amateur; I only take pictures when I feel the spirit move me and don’t take it too seriously. Most times it is a way to just unwind after a challenging day at work. My job as a funeral director at David Lee Funeral Home in Wayzata can take on a lot of emotional weight so the process of finding scenes, slowing down and waiting for the right timing, and then capturing a moment is very therapeutic.
