Oakwood Elementary serves the community en masse.
Oakwood Elementary School’s annual Family Service Night brought together more than 300 community members to benefit people in need. Throughout the night, families participated in simple projects to teach children the value of serving others. In 2010:
- More than $600 raised towards sponsorship of a Helping Paws service dog
- 583 sandwiches made for homeless people in Minneapolis
- 155 sand scarves sewn for U.S. soldiers in the Middle East
- 135 notes made for Meals on Wheels recipients in Plymouth and Wayzata
- 75 letters written to Minnesota soldiers serving overseas
- Five ponytails donated to Locks of Love
- 50 fleece blankets made for children staying at HomeFree in Plymouth
- 300 snack bags assembled for IOCP Food Shelf
- 270 bags of rice packed for the IOCP Food Shelf
- 425 winter gear items collected for homeless people in Minneapolis
- 220 birthday bags assembled for the Minneapolis Crisis Nursery
- 70 sets of fleece hats and scarves assembled to be distributed by three service organizations in Minneapolis
