Excelsior resident Michelle MacCormick had just weathered a storm in her personal life when she captured this shot of Lake Minnetonka after an early evening thunderstorm. A recent divorce had turned MacCormick’s life upside down. “I had to start my life all over again with a newborn and a one-and-a-half-year-old son,” she says. In addition to adjusting to life as a single mom, MacCormick was also busy launching a new business venture. Caring for her children and new business left MacCormick with little time for socializing, so she was thrilled when her friends invited her to join them for an evening at Bayside.
On this particular night—her first night out without her children since her divorce—a summer storm rolled in. “I was very disappointed that it would rain on the first night I was venturing off without my children,” says MacCormick. But as she arrived at Bayside, the storm dissipated and she walked to the end of the dock. What she saw took her breath away.
Not only was the sunset spectacular, but MacCormick “saw [herself] in that evening sky.” After such turbulent weather, the scene was now serene and brilliant. “It was as if the sky opened up just for me to start living again,” she says. “The photo reminds me that there is always sunshine after the rain, and the beauty after is so worth the storm.”
