Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s Books in the Garden

The Books in the Garden series explores the power of gardening in text.

The Minnesota Landscape Arboretum’s Books in the Garden series is not your ordinary book club. The group meets in one of the country’s most beautiful gardens, and is led in discussion by award-winning teacher and author Toni McNaron of the University of Minnesota.

Says Susan Thurston-Hamerski, the Arboretum’s manager of adult education, “All of the literature centers around the deep and abiding power gardens hold in our lives. These aren’t ‘how to garden books,’ but texts from ancient literature to contemporary fiction and prose.” Titles read by the group include Paradise Lost, The Secret Garden and Gardens in the Dunes.

The Books in the Garden series, which began in January, is gearing up for its second session that will meet monthly from July to December and include works by Welty, Spenser and more. “Along with [McNaron] sharing her wealth of understanding of literature, the class participants bring additional valuable insights. The energy of the experience resides in the intersection of these points of view,” says Thurston-Hamerski.
