Though I’m a fan of love, I’m not a fan of Valentine’s Day. Mainly because it feels so much like a Hallmark crafted occasion.
It’s not a holiday I celebrate as an adult. My partner Tony and I have been together almost seven years. He regularly shares with me that I’m the love of his life, and I share that he is mine. I’ve come to have a deeper understanding of what true love is.
Love is acceptance. Love is seeing your partner as they are, not as you wish them to be. Love is giving your partner the bigger piece of cake. This was a true test for me, because nothing and no one comes between me and my cake. Yet I usually find myself giving Tony the larger slice.
Love is not perfection. Love is persistence. When you have that, you celebrate it each day, not just on one day a year.
