We all know the expanse of Lake Minnetonka (22.7 miles, if you needed a reminder). So when the masses of ice covering the lake start to break up under the warm sun, it’s clear that spring has truly arrived. Cindy Barnett of Excelsior captured that wonderful annual moment using her favorite Canon 5d Camera. Her photo, Spring in Excelsior, received an honorable mention in our 2017 Lens on Lake Minnetonka photography contest in the Nature & Wildlife category.
Barnett describes her photography as an “obsessive hobby.” She has been taking photography classes at the Minnetonka Center for the Arts for over two years. With their help, she has become hooked. Barnett considers her classmates and teachers “such an inspiration.” The Minnetonka Center for the Arts offers digital photography courses for various skill levels and ages, along with specialty courses on making photos and using software like Lightroom. (If that sounds too daunting, check out one of the center’s iPhone photography classes.)
When taking pictures, Barnett says she’s drawn toward landscapes and wants to “capture the stillness of the moment.” When snow and ice melt into sun and green, she’ll be there.
