The Wayzata Chilly Open Is Planning for Its Biggest Year

The Wayzata Chilly Open is celebrating its 34th birthday. In 1984, community members partnered with the Greater Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce to create the event to celebrate quintessential Minnesota winters. What started as one 9-hole golf course carved in a frozen Lake Minnetonka has grown to three 9-hole courses—and a hugely popular winter festival. This year, the theme will be “Minnesota Made” and organizers are planning for over 1,500 attendants. “We’d love to have more, but we have to keep it running smoothly,” says Brooke Beyer, director of community events and marketing for the Greater Wayzata Area Chamber of Commerce.

The hallmark of the event is the golf course. Golfers can register online and bring their own clubs. Other activities include snowga (yoga in the snow), snowkiting, a concert, ice skating, a family movie and a chili cook-off competition among local restaurants. “It’s a great event for our community members to celebrate winter,” Beyer says.
