Tracie Bea Daum’s Excelsior photography business is focused on families and kids, and she has three perfect subjects right at home: her own children. This photo, The Cold Never Bothered Them Anyways (Arctic Fever), took first place in the Kids & Families category of our 2017 Lens on Lake Minnetonka photo contest. Daum snapped the image during last year’s Arctic Fever Festival at Manitou Park, right on the ice rink. Her kids, Ava, Elias and Penelope, “were having fun playing on the ice with friends and Olaf [the snowman],” she explains. “I’ve always loved bright white images with pops of color, and their winter outfits were no accident when I bought them.”
It’s a joyful, mostly candid scene, she says. “My kids are no strangers to cameras in their faces, but this one was a favorite, because they’re just happy and having fun together,” Daum says. “I thought the composition and bright white and color would grab people’s attention.” She used her Canon 6D to capture the photo.
Daum does photo shoots year-round, including senior portraits and other setups, and she especially loves her after-Thanksgiving mini sessions, which she holds on a local Christmas tree farm (the perfect setting for holiday-card family photos).
