Each August, lake-area youngsters entering third, fourth or fifth grades learn important safety information from local police officers, paramedics, firefighters and water patrol—all while having a great time—at South Lake Safety Camp. “It is an opportunity for kids to meet first responders in a great environment, instead of in an emergency,” says Kellie Murphy Ringate, fire inspector for the Excelsior Fire Department.
Kids get to see the inside of a police car, learn why firefighters wear the gear they do, how to wear a life jacket properly, and about stranger safety. Kids are also fitted for bike helmets, which they can take home.
Murphy Ringate says that by learning about safety in a positive, non-emergency atmosphere, kids are empowered and know how to prevent emergencies, and what to do should one arise.
This year’s South Lake Safety Camp is August 10 from 8:15 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Badger Park. $20. Visit the webiste here for more information and to register your child by August 3.
