What started with a thumb turned Minnetonka native Robyn Frank into a successful entrepreneur when she launched Thumbs Cookies in 2012. Now she’s on a quest to fund her dream car: a Thumb Bug.
While living in Brooklyn, New York, Frank often made “thumb” cookies for friends, using a recipe she learned from her mom growing up. The baker presses her thumb into the circle of dough, creating an impression for chocolate, jam or other filling. “I spent a lot of time in the kitchen with the women in my family,” Frank explains. “That’s also why I started baking a lot, because I was trying to go back to something that made me feel more like me.”
After friends raved about her cookies, she worked with a graphic designer to develop the Thumbs Cookies brand.
Frank moved back to Minnesota in 2014 and saw her cookie business heat up. “I kind of arrived at a time when [people were] really interested in focusing on the local food scene,” she says.
Now, with a staff of three, she bakes 25,000 cookies per week, offering flavors like cinnamon sugar, peanut butter, sea salt, and seasonal specialty flavors.
Frank also hopes to bring her cookies on the road with the Thumb Bug, a purple Volkswagen Beetle filled with yummy cookies. Frank recently launched a Kickstarter campaign for the car, which will act as a delivery vehicle and promotional vehicle, where Frank can dish out freshly made Thumbs Cookies on the go. Drooling yet?
