Christmas Tree Clean Up

What to do with your Christmas tree once you’ve taken it down.

For those who choose pine over plastic, December 26 marks the first day of tree-disposal season. If you’re not sure what to do with your post-season tannenbaum, here are a few tips:

-Use curbside pickup. Many communities, including Wayzata (for utility paying Wayzata residents) and Shorewood, offer this service. Keep in mind that there might be a fee, depending on where you live.

-Take your tree to a drop-off recycling center. Minnetonka Public Works offers tree disposal for residents during winter pruning and brush drop-offs in March only.

-Make an appointment for nonprofit pickup. Some Boy Scout troops offer this service, sometimes in exchange for a small donation.

-Put the tree in your yard waste container or compost bin. You might need to cut your tree into smaller pieces and dispose of it as you would other yard waste.

Before disposing of your tree, remember to remove all lights and decorations.

Check your city’s website for more information on disposal options. For more recommendations, visit the website here.
