The Orono U13 and U14 Girls Soccer teams made it their mission this year to experience the Women’s FIFA World Cup. They washed cars, sold Orono “wrappers” and ran a raffle, raising a grand total of $22,000.
Using their fundraising money, 30 girls and 20 parents took a bus up to Winnipeg, Manitoba, where they saw four games, including the very first match of the tournament. “We didn’t know if the USA team would make it to Winnipeg, but we got lucky,” says Summer Taylor, one of the moms who organized the trip along with Kristen Giovanis.
The girls didn’t just sponsor their own trip. “Our girls mentored a group of inner-city kids from Winnipeg and played soccer with them,” Taylor says. “We donated the rest of our tickets to these kids so they could attend the games.” The Orono teams shared a total of 60 tickets with other teams.
