As Minnesotans, we’ve come to accept the existence of winter. We get to a point where we stop cursing snow blowers and shovels, and we find a way to embrace our environment. For David Holmes, one of the coldest, snowiest winters in Minnesota history meant an opportunity to create arctic-style art. With a 20-by-10-foot pile of snow as his canvas, he created a miniature Mount Rushmore in his front yard.
Just in time for President’s Day 2014, the sculpture attracted the attention of passersby as well as national media outlets like the Today Show. “For me, it’s about bringing creative energy into the community,” says Holmes. “It’s a fun way to help stimulate neighborhood relationships and positive interaction.”
While Holmes has not yet announced his art project for this winter, he says it is something that will definitely happen. Keep an eye out for his winter work to appear this season. —Margaret Pendleton
