Sonja Midtune, a Minnetonka High School alumna and now budding musician in Los Angeles, is a prime example of a person whose roots lie in Lake Minnetonka, but whose influence has spread much further.
Sonja’s older brother, Jens Midthun, says that from a young age, Sonja did it all. (Sonja’s last name was also Midthun, but she changed it for ease of pronunciation.) She sang, she acted, she danced and she played instruments. Come high school, Midtune was already forming bands with other students and playing at Minnetonka High School coffeehouses.
“She’s always been a performer,” says her brother. “I have watched her in every sort of performance medium, but music has always been the main thing for her.”
Now living in Los Angeles, Midtune has made quite a splash into the music industry. Both she and her brother attribute hard work as the reason for Midtune’s success.
With a single “There’s A Fire,” under her belt, this summer Midtune is excited to be releasing a four-song EP. The best part is that she gets to collaborate with Sean Hurley and Aaron Sterling, both from John Mayer’s band, for the project.
Her success is inspiring, even for her big brother. “She went for it, and is doing quite well just by trying,” he says.
Midtune loves coming back to Minnetonka to perform for friends and family, claiming she gets a level of constructive criticism here that only makes her music better.
