Kids’ fitness is a hot-button issue these days, so what are local schools doing about it? Minnetonka’s International Spanish Language Academy (ISLA) is tackling the issue with help from the National Football League’s (NFL) Play 60 program. One of only 34 schools in the nation to receive the honor, ISLA will use part of the $10,000 grant that comes with the award to build a playground—the perfect incentive to “play 60” minutes daily.
The school decreed December 7 “Minnesota Vikings Day” and welcomed Vikings tight end Visanthe Shiancoe, Vikings cheerleaders and the Vikings mascot for a day of fitness and fandom. Students ditched their usual school uniforms for purple, participated in the ultimate NFL physical education class and were featured on KARE-11’s “Vikings Weekly” show.
