For the past three years, community members and others have gathered on America’s hungriest holiday to support the Minnetonka High School track and field and cross country teams at the Tonka Turkey Trot. The funds raised from the race go towards booster club expenses including additional coaches and equipment; some of the funds are also donated back to the community. This year, planners hope to see participant numbers surpass the 2012 turnout of 1,200.
Dan Meiusi, president of the Minnetonka Track and Field and Cross Country Association, says the Tonka Turkey Trot differs from other races because it is a family tradition and has a strong community feel. The Turkey Trot invites runners of all levels, everyone from young children to seasoned athletes, to join in the fun. New this year is a Turkey Tot Trot, a 100-yard dash for little tykes.
The event also features a babysitting pen and costumes are encouraged. Registration costs are $20 for youth and $25 for adults before November 25.
Looking for another reason to join in the fun? “Earn your bird, as they say,” says Meiusi.
