Minnetonka Girls-only Book Clubs

Lake-area girls-only book clubs increase students’ literary appetites.

School lunch is often bland, but one local woman is doing her part to spice it up. Pamela Klinger-Horn’s girls’ book club, now in its eighth year, meets during lunch at the Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic School in Minnetonka. The group members discuss books, play games and plan field trips to local literary attractions like The Loft Literary Center and the Fitzgerald Theater. Klinger-Horn attributes the club’s success to its informal nature. “We try not to make it academic; they get enough of that in class,” she says. “We like to keep it lively—keep it fun.”Sarah Karels, a book club alum, adds that her experience was no ordinary one. “The amount of time and dedication Mrs. Horn had for us was incredible,” Karels says. “I took away one of the best experiences of my life from book club.” Klinger-Horn also runs a monthly girls-only book club at the Excelsior Library for other young ladies looking to whet their literary appetite.
