Making Music at Mount Calvary

A church music ministry grows into something more.

The Mount Calvary Academy of Music, originally founded by the music ministry of Mount Calvary Lutheran Church, has been shaping musicians for the past 14 years.

Executive director Mary Lechelt, who’s also a piano and violin instructor, says the academy’s goal is for instructors to form a strong and meaningful connection with students though music. (Lessons are not faith-based, and about two-thirds of students are not members of the church.) “When you’re a music teacher, your connection with a student can go on for years,” she says. Instruction takes place in classrooms at the church, but the music academy became an independent nonprofit about nine years ago. “We call ourselves a community school,” Lechelt says.

Instructors come from all over the metro, and in addition to their instrumental expertise, all have a special knack for working with students of any age.
