October hosts this year’s annual Fire Prevention Week, presenting a unique opportunity for families to rethink their fire safety at home. In the spirit of this week, three local fire departments will be opening their doors to raise awareness and educate the public, so head over to one of these events for some family-friendly fire safety fun.
The Mound Fire Department will host its Fire Prevention Open House from 6–8 p.m. October 7 at the firehouse, 2415 Wilshire Blvd. Activities may include plenty of fun for kids, meet Sparky the Fire Dog, CPR and AED demonstrations, fire safety education and displays, fire truck rides and much more.
The Excelsior Fire District will replace its Fire Prevention Open House and Safety Fair with a Business Services Mini Event. The event, held from 3-6 p.m. on October 1 at Excelsior Fire Station #1, 24100 Smithtown Road, Shorewood, will educate and reinforce businesses regarding the Minnesota State Fire Code, methods for fire prevention and how to slow the spread of fires. The event intends to support Excelsior businesses with fire prevention education.
The Long Lake Fire Department hosts its Fire Prevention Open House from 5:30–8 p.m. October 5 at Long Lake Fire Station #1, 340 Willow Drive N., Orono. A plan is in the works to offer a virtual open house. In conjunction with the event, the Long Lake Fire Department encourages community members to submit short fire safety videos to the Long Lake Fire Facebook page.
