Lens on Lake Minnetonka: Red, White and Cute

Photographer Kristyn Hewitt talks about her award- winning photo.

This adorable and summery photo won the Readers’ Choice award in our 2017 Lens on Lake Minnetonka contest. We talked with photographer Kristyn Hewitt about this patriotic little cutie.

Tell us about the subject of this photo.
This adorable little guy is our first grandson, Iver. He was 2 months old. I took this picture [last August] in my living room.

What inspired you to go with the patriotic theme?
I thought this would be a cute idea, since Iver’s father is in the Navy Special Forces. I purchased the handmade hat and booties on Etsy.

What’s your photography background?
I started about five years ago, taking classes at the Gillespie Center in Mound. I mostly take pictures of my children’s sporting events and family functions. I guess I have become the “official” photographer. I’m constantly trying to challenge myself and improve my skills.

What makes this photo special to you?
On March 9, my son was deployed to Iraq for seven months. He will miss a lot of Iver’s milestones—his first steps, his first birthday, etc. I’m extremely proud of my son! I’m also thankful for all the men and women in service and those who have served, for their dedication and sacrifice for our freedom.
