Lens on Lake Minnetonka Photo Captures 'Frozen Ice, Sunshine and Beauty'

Two Swans in the water during winter at Gray's Bay.

Each month, we feature one of the winning photos from our 2019 Lens on Lake Minnetonka photo contest. This month, we asked photographer Joseph Syfko to tell us about “Minnehaha Creek Swans,” which received an honorable mention in our Wildlife & Nature category.

When and where did you take the photo?
This photo was taken last March while on my walk at Gray’s Bay Dam Park. I spotted the beautiful swan pair while standing on the dock looking out at the Minnehaha Creek headwaters.

What’s your favorite thing about the image?
The bay was completely iced over except for a small patch of open water, due to the dam spillage. The open water next to the frozen ice, sunshine and beauty of the swans made for a very intimate photo session.

What kind of camera did you use?
A Canon 60D.

What’s your photography background?
I have been interested in wildlife photography for many years. My techniques improved greatly after taking a community college class several years ago.

I love capturing special moments to share with others through photography.
