The Wisconsin-based film production company My Town Pictures is taking the Midwest by storm, one small town at a time. The latest hotspot to move into the spotlight is right in our backyard: the quaint town of Excelsior.

The historic Lake Minnetonka village is the backdrop of a small independent film, One Song, shot in fall 2013. This emotional drama features well-known stars, including Oscar-nominee Sally Kellerman (M*A*S*H), Melissa Gilbert (Little House on the Prairie) and Daniel Roebuck (The Fugitive, Lost, and Matlock).

Many of the extras in the cast are Minnesotans, and so are many of those behind the camera. “It’s a great opportunity for our community to be in front of the camera as well as behind it,” says Nathalie Wilson, local production manager. “We’re involved in investor relations, housing and catering.”

The film’s writer/director, Scott Thompson, started My Town Productions, a community film company that creates films for and in small Midwest towns. This is his first movie in Minnesota. He chose Excelsior for its beautiful lakeside homes. He’s planning to film in Maple Lake and Zumbrota later this year. The film will debut this year.
