Greenwood's Rob Evans Competes in National Windsurfing Championship

The Minnetonka High School graduate will compete against windsurfers from around the world.
Rob Evans prepares for an early-morning ride on Lake Minnetonka.

For more than three decades, Greenwood resident Rob Evans has been windsurfing. A Minnetonka High School graduate, Evans has competed in hundreds of windsurfing regattas around the world, and August 23–26 Evans will compete in the 2012 Kona North American championships.

The competition is open to everyone, and Evans says he expects to face about 70 competitors from around the world. All the boards are the same in the race, he says, “making the outcome more dependent on the skill of the sailor than who has the best gear.”

Evans says he trains year-round to windsurf, and when we learned his top windsurfing speed is around 45 miles per hour, we understood why. In the summer, Evans often windsurfs on Lake Waconia and Lake Minnetonka. “I usually go into the main [part of the] lake,” he says, adding “larger [bodies] of water makes the wind smoother and stronger.”
