Golden Rule in Excelsior Opens Upstairs Workshop Space

Excelsior’s Golden Rule expands with instructional and event space.

Erin Duininck, owner of Excelsior’s Golden Rule, recently acquired the apartment space above her shop to use as a small event space for public workshops and private events and parties.

While Duininck says that she’s hoping to coordinate events for the space rather than teach a lot of classes herself, one subject she likes to teach focuses on emotion. “That’s where my heart is,” she says. Other workshops and events have included a “secret supper,” where attendees connected over food and drink, and an air plant workshop earlier this month.

Duininck also plans to open up her space to teachers and artists who promote the same ideas and themes that can be found in the Golden Rule shop. “Our tagline is ‘Promoting kindness and community,’ ” Duininck says. “So we want it to be this connection space where people feel safe.”

Artistic exploration, especially for younger artists, will be a consistent theme as workshops are planned. “There are all these beautiful new mediums this century. There are kids who come in and think they’re not necessarily good at drawing, and then they realize that they’re good at all these different things that we’re teaching them,” she says.
