Girl Scouts Serve Local Lakes

In honor of their centennial, local Girl Scouts strive to keep our famed lakes clean.

To celebrate their 100th anniversary, the Girl Scouts of Minnesota and Wisconsin River Valleys will serve more than 200 local communities through a Centennial Day of Service: 2012 Take Action Project. In partnership with the Freshwater Society and 3M, a three-part project will take place October 13.

In the fall, in full leaf-raking season, too often stray leaves end up in storm drains, leading to harmful levels of phosphorus and encouraging algae blooms. To keep our lakes clean (and aquatic life alive), volunteers will rake leaves, educate the community and mark storm drains, to help prevent nearly 20,000 pounds of phosphorus and 10 million pounds of algae in our waters.
