Located on historic Water Street in Excelsior, Coalition found a perfect home for itself in the quaint downtown. The restaurant opened its doors in 2014 and has since become a local favorite for its fresh food and lakeside vibe. Co-owned by longtime friends Deacon Eells and Eli Wollenzien, Coalition also opened a new location on 50th & France in Edina in May.
After getting requests to host private events but not having the space, the Coalition team found an opportunity to purchase a renovated vintage home in Excelsior. The historic DeGroodt house was built in 1900 and has since been refurbished to perfection. Tiffany Winter, marketing lead and founder at Cooks Bay Marketing, describes the house as “much more than a private event space—it’s an experience.” With a capacity of about 30, the space is suited for small, intimate gatherings. It boasts a large outdoor area, exterior gingerbread trim and a bridal suite.
Of course, for a perfect event, you need delicious food. Coalition offers a diverse catering menu, ranging from Korean tacos to savory crepes to prime rib. Taking a personalized approach rather than a large-scale industrial one, Coalition Catering sits one on one with its clients to design the menu. “They’re so great to work with. They just want to make your event meaningful. And delicious, obviously,” says Winter.
