September marks the 40th anniversary of Wayzata’s iconic James J. Hill Days. Originally started to honor the city’s “Empire Builder” and Great Northern Railroad founder, the four-day festival hopes to draw a record number of visitors. Last year, more than 20,000 in- and out-of-towners stopped by for shopping, concerts and a carnival.
Says Brooke Beyer, community events coordinator for Wayzata’s Chamber of Commerce, “My goal is that this year is the best celebration yet—and that all attending and participating in it feel the same way!”
The festival is set to be a success: Two A-list concerts (last year, the main stage hosted country superstars Big & Rich—details on this year’s show can be found on the James J. Hill website), shopping deals on Thursday night, fireworks, a parade and a slew of new-this-year activities are set to entice community members and friends from other cities.
“There’s something for everyone,” says Beyer. “And our gorgeous, resort-like town appreciates its rich history and is using that to grow and welcome wonderful celebrations and gatherings.”
As part of the planning committee’s goal to embrace the lake, they’re partnering with Wilderness Inquiry to host the first Voyageur Canoe Race. More than 30 24-foot hand-crafted cedar canoes will set out on an adventure on Wayzata Bay on September 7.
