Dirty Rotten Scoundrels at Old Log Theater

Old Log Theatre’s spring show, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels, promises over-the-top entertainment.

When we think of classic Broadway, we may think of extravagant settings, farcical humor and overblown musical numbers—and Old Log Theatre’s spring musical, Dirty Rotten Scoundrels fits that bill exactly. It’s one of the largest productions in Old Log Theatre history, and director Kent Knutson plans on doing it big as the script invites.

“Big” is a theme throughout the musical: It’s the story of two swindlers with big stakes in the French Riviera, and the music is flashy, with moves to match. One memorable number is even titled “Great Big Stuff,” during which a New Jersey native marvels at the elegant Europeans and rants about what he would buy if he was wealthy.

Knutson says the production is a good fit for Old Log. “It’s the humor a lot of our audience grew up with… it’s similar to the Pink Panther.” Though the movie is well-known, the musical hasn’t had much of a run in the Twin Cities. Knutson’s not worried. “I know people are going to come here, laugh and have a great time.”
