This Delicious White Wine is Like Sauvignon Blanc Meets Chardonnay

Montenidoli vernaccia di San Gimignano
Montenidoli makes a wonderful vernaccia di San Gimignano.

For September, I’ve selected an often overlooked grape varietal, though it comes from a very prominent wine region. Montenidoli makes a wonderful vernaccia di San Gimignano. Vernaccia is the white grape varietal, and San Gimingano is the sub-region of Tuscany where it is from. This is a nice medium- to full-bodied white wine. Think of it as sauv-blanc meets chardonnay, or similar to a white Bordeaux. It’s got tons of minerality and stone fruit flavors, notes of honeydew melon and a nice weighted texture. Tuscany makes some great white wines that I feel are often overlooked, because the region is so well known for its reds. The 2014 has terrific reviews, and is drinking great right now. $19.99.
