A City’s Secrets

Explore local history and architecture on a walking tour of Summit Avenue.

Whether you’re entertaining guests from out of town or just want to know more about Saint Paul’s colorful past, Summit Avenue walking tours are a fun way to discover one of the city’s most charming neighborhoods.

The 90-minute tours, led by a guide from the historic James J. Hill House, combine architectural and social history, with a focus on Gilded Age mansions, the architectural history of the buildings and the notable characters who occupied them.

From Georgian revivals built by lumber barons to several residences designed by Cass Gilbert, the noted architect of the Minnesota State Capitol building, there is something to see and learn at every turn.

Tours are offered May–September. All ages. $14 adults, $12 seniors and college students, $10 ages 6–17; $2 discount for MNHS members. 11 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturdays, 2 p.m. Sundays.
